Kick'n it w/Keith McNally

Restaurateur, Keith McNally of Balthazar, Pastis, Schiller's Liquor Bar, Odeon, Lucky Strike, Morandi, Pravda, Minetta Tavern, and most recently (opened in February 2010), Pulino Bar & Pizzeria http://www.pulinosny.com/, brings affordability, great taste, and appealing eye candy to NYC’s East Village.

McNally’s baby resides on the notoriously busy corner of Houston & Bowery with downtown’s trendy crowd swarming on the street corner hoping to be seated inside (or out) to get a taste of Nate Appleman’s brick oven pizza and modern Italian antipasti (http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/pulinos-bar-pizzeria/menu).

Pulino’s corner is truly the crossroads between the Lower East Side (LES), SOHO, East Village, NoLita, and (Meat Packing’s rival), the Bowery. Seaming that it was a Saturday night between the hours of 8pm and 11pm in downtown Manhattan, I was surprised my mother and I were seated so quickly. It could have been the Hebrew connection we had with the Maitre D, or simply our modest party of 2 on such a busy night.

With Daniel Boulud’s more affordable (than Daniel), burger joint, DBGB (http://www.danielnyc.com/), across the street, Pulino’s competitive prices may also attract the price conscious customer. The rise of the sister restaurant has become more common in Manhattan over the past few years. As fashion designers create a sister line such as DKNY is to Donna Karan, or Polo is to Ralph Lauren, CK is to Calvin Klein, so too is DBGB to Daniel Boulud and Pulino to Balthazar, Pastis, Minetta Tavern. With antipasti ranging from $8.00 for the Roasted Olives (with dried fruit & almonds) to $15.oo for the Smoked Sablefish (with bottarga, celery, capers & dill)...The pizzas are priced anywhere from $9.00 for the Bianca (extra virgin olive oil & sea salt), to $18.00 for the Gamberi (rock shrimp, speck, tomato, garlic & oreganoand). The most expensive bites on the menu are $29.00 for the Roasted Scallops (with grapefruit, olives, shallots, herbs & radicchio) and the NY Strip (with anchovy butter, potatoes, rosemary & parmigiano). http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/pulinos-bar-pizzeria/menu

Pulino follows a similar model like sister restaurant, Schiller’s Liquor Bar, (http://www.schillersny.com/), where the wines are listed by category under the headings “cheap, decent, and good,” except at Pulino, if you opt to not buy a full bottle of wine, you have the option to get an 18 oz. carafe categorized under red/white, “light, medium, full body.” They are $18.00 and serve approximately three glasses of wine…AMAZING!

Kick'n it on Fire Island

Thanks to an invite from a girlfriend (Shera), this past weekend was my first on Fire Island. Shera and her college friends (roommates and coworkers) rented a beautiful beach house in Ocean Beach for the weekend of July 4th, and invited me to join in the festivities. 100% of the house was single, professional, pretty girls from NY, NJ, and CA. In fact, I’ve never met a group of females less competitive and catty than this group. I instantly made new friends and couldn’t have been more welcomed by them (so thank you ladies). Some of the girls were graduates of University of Michigan; some went to Indiana and Syracuse. All of them knew how to play Flip Cups and Beer Pong along with the rest of Ocean Beach! I felt a little left out at first but once I learned the rules of the games, I was playing with the big dogs in no time!

I truly did not know what to expect when I first got to Fire Island. I mean, all I knew was that it was low key, no cars, flip flops, BBQ’s, and tons of beach time! It wasn’t hard to get out there from NYC at all.

I purchased a $30.00 “weekend getaway” at Penn Station (http://www.mta.info/lirr/getaways/Beach/OceanBeach.htm) which covers 1 round trip train ticket to Bay Shore, 2 one way taxi rides w/David Brothers (http://www.davidbroscarservice.com/) from the train station to the ferry, and a round trip ferry ride to and from Ocean Beach. David Brother’s taxi also offers shuttles to and from NYC to the Ocean Beach ferry station for about $25.00 one way and the ferry runs every hour and costs $17.00 for a round trip ticket.

**Fire Island Fact**
It runs 32 miles east to west and one mile north to south and is located south of Long Island.

I was so excited to get out of New York for the weekend and our forecast was PERFECT (90 degrees and sunny all weekend long).

“I’m going to greet you at the ferry. It’s like the movies…are you going to run into my arms?” (text message sent to my phone from Shera @ 5:30pm Friday July 2nd).

I got off the ferry to find a crowd of people meeting and greeting each other. I spotted Shera waiving her hands at me, sporting her Carrera aviator sun glasses, cut off denim shorts and a Rolling Stones vintage T-shirt with flip flops (this was definitely NOT the Hamptons)!!

(walk to the beach)

Ocean Beach is a hybrid of young 21-26ish year old post college grads kick’n it at the beach and young families vacationing at their beach houses for the weekend. The town is cute (literally), with no cars on the island…just Radio Flyer wagons and bicycles as means of transportation! All structures are dollhouse-like and I found myself flashing back to fond memories of summer camp. The mission on the island was to drink beer, get some sun, and hopefully do the “walk of shame” out of some cute boy’s share house the following morning. I couldn’t tell whether I belonged or not.

From beer games like Flip Cups to Beer Pong and $5.00 cover charges to get into dive bars on the island, I wasn’t quite sure the night scene was my ‘thing.’ I was a trooper and did go out one of the three nights I was kick’n it on Fire Island. I managed to learn how to play Flip Cups like a champ, and acquired a mild taste for beer (that only lasted for one night).

Now don’t get me wrong, Fire Island is one HOT place to party! If you’re between the age of 21 and 26, with a standard deviation of approximately 3 years on both ends of the curve then this is the place for you. The beach was crowded (which I totally did not mind), but from a snapshot, it sort of looked like MTV’s The Jersey Shore, minus the tattoos, and Snooki’s bouffant! With Michigan University in the lead and Syracuse University and Indiana University right behind it…it truly felt like I was crashing a college reunion.
(the Seasons Bed & Breakfast)

Please don’t misread this blog for a bad review. Quite the contrary! If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say it at all.

Fire Island is fun, fun, fun. If you’re looking for Spring Break during the Summer months of June-August, and don’t care for expensive bottle service, polo and golf or high heels and pretty manicured boys in fancy cars, then Ocean Beach @ Fire Island is where it’s at!

Had I spent my summers in Fire Island three to four years ago, I would have probably been raving about how this was the best place on earth!

However…I think I’ve missed the boat ;-)

Kick'n it East Village

American Apparel ®
183 E. Houston St. (between Allen & Orchard)
(212) 597-4600
http://www.americanapparel.net/

If you’ve ever walked past the American Apparel ® on E Houston Street in NYC’s East Village, you’d notice the hipster clan gathered outside smoking stoges, eating Mr. Softy ice cream, or simply kick’n it on the benches outside this International Cotton Shop.

This uber “Made in America” establishment is usually open till 11PM on weekdays and as late as midnight on the weekend. There is no bar or kitchen, rather super cute employees (sporting 100% American Apparel ®) and what sounds like a live DJ is probably one of the employees’ iPod!

This past Saturday night, while en route to Keith McNally’s Pulino up the street on the corner of Houston & Bowery, I couldn’t help but notice the young skinny boys hiding behind their American Apparel ® “Legalize Gay” t-shirts (http://store.americanapparel.net/2001lg.html), 2001LG Legalize Gay T-Shirt $17.00. I asked one of the pretty boys “hey man, what’s going on inside?!”
He answered, “buy one get one…you know…for your friend or partner?”
He smiled at me through his big green eyes and bright teal Legalize Gay T-shirt…I smiled back and walked in…

Tribe Called Quest was blaring through the store speakers and I was instantly in a good mood. I felt so downtown…I can’t really explain the feelings…but having my primary residence in the heart (or armpit) of the East Village, I simply FELT 'downtown' from the inside out.

Walking around the store, I noticed that every item is accompanied by a picture of it on a model.
**Note: all American Apparel ®models are employees of the store…there is no modeling agency American Apparel ® hires for their marketing campaign.**

Because I absolutely LOVED what I saw and embraced my downtown feeling in my stomach…I figured, why not promote American Apparel ®on Kicknitnyc.blogspot.com?!!

I approached the pretty (young) salesgirls and told them about my blog. I asked them if I could promote the store and write about my experience. I also told them that I would link all the top selling items for Summer 2010 to their website!

The top selling items for the summer at American Apparel ®in the E Village are:

1.http://store.americanapparel.net/rsatd300.html?cid=139
RSATD300
3-D Flower Mesh Jumper
White, Black
$78.00

2.http://store.americanapparel.net/rsalc300e.html
FSALC300E
El Salvador Lace Tee
Crème El Salvador, Black El Salvador
$38.00

http://store.americanapparel.net/rsalc318.html
RSALC318
Leaf Flower Lace Loose Tank
Black Leaf Flower, Ivory Leaf Flower
$28.00

3.http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa0306ss.html
RSA0906SS
Stripe Mid-Length Pocket Tank
Red Natural Stripe, Navy Natural Stripe
$18.00

4.http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa0506.html?c=Red%20Micro-Mesh
RSA0506
Twist Scarf
$14.00

Among other things, there is a huge section of intimates and bathing suites, cover-ups and workout gear…men’s and women’s casual and dressy… American Apparel ® covers every section in your closet and clearly doesn’t discriminate…the best part of it all?? It’s born and bred in the FABULOUS USA!

Kick'n it Meat Packing

If you were out on Sat in Meat Packing and you're on this distribution list...please email me your pictures!
Whether we were kickn it together or not...send your photos and tell me where they were taken...

From fancy champagne & ill beats, to cute waiters & french boys, to birthday girls and birthday cake...I would have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with this past Saturday's outcome @ Bagatelle...considering Meat Packing on a Saturday night is not where you'd normally find us...we managed to pull it off well..REALLY WELL!

Thank you Bistro Bagatelle & RDV (13th Entertainment) for your hospitality & The Boys Entertainment for making any venue possible!!

Happy Birthday LeLe, this one's going to be a good one...

juicy review coming soon to Kickn' it NYC...check out BOTH blogs

Kick'n it NYC & Kickn'n it RAIN OR SHINE...

“The near right corner please…” I was a little annoyed I told the cabby to take Washington instead of Hudson. I wanted him to pull up in front of Bistro Bagatelle (www.bistrotbagatelle.com) since walking in 6 inch Jimmy Choos on cobblestone streets in NYC’s infamous meatpacking district (without falling flat on your face) was nearly impossible.
As I got out of the cab, I grabbed the birthday presents and did a once-over making sure I didn’t leave or drop anything on my way out (we’d be here forever if I’d blog about every time I’ve lost something in a NYC taxi)…I tried my best not to look too stupid walking trying to avoid the gaps in between the cobblestones so I don’t fall and break my face or nick my python heels.
We were getting together for a fabulous birthday I helped arrange for a close friend of mine. I was excited to be dressed up and out in Meat Packing on a Saturday night! A slight change from my usual Lower East Side Nike dunks, American Apparel attire. It was approximately 10:45pm and I arrived early (wow, how did that happen?? I have no idea).

I pulled up to the front of the crowd, “ciao darling…you look stunning! Twice in one week already?” Philip, the door manager teased me since I had a post Bikram late night rendezvous with girlfriends @ Bagatelle 3 nights earlier… “I am here for a birthday dinner tonight darling…I’m early!” I winked at Philip and made my way into the restaurant.Bagatelle partners, Aymeric Clemente (best known for the UES’s Le Bilbouquet), and luxury branding & PR king Remi Laba had a vision of bringing the South of France to New York’s Meat Packing district…and they did just that! The only thing missing from this Cote d ‘Azure party was the beach, the bikinis, and the Saudi oil money.

I walked into a dimly lit room where the DJ was spinning French house music and the ladies dancing table top in their designer stilettos and slick back ponytails.
“Bagatelle (from the Château de Bagatelle) is an indoor table game related to billiards…The game bagatelle evolved from efforts to bring outdoor games, such as croquet and shuffleboard, inside and atop tables…”

I scanned the room for our table of 9 and realized they gave us the corner booth under the Elizabeth Taylor silk screen…you know… (The one they give celebs & page six regulars)…I felt cool ;-)

The restaurant was crowded and every table was sold out, with the average party of 6-8 ppl. I followed the Maître D through the obnoxiously beautiful clan of people gathered by the bar to our table in the corner. I noticed four extremely tall, extremely beautiful, extremely well groomed and attractive men standing together by our end of the bar…before I reached our table, I couldn’t help but open my big mouth and ask one of them (whose name I can’t remember), if he was a soccer player. He looked at me and smiled and replied, “Rugby…we are rugby players…we are here from France!”

I nearly fainted…well…not really…he had no clue since I pretended it was nice to meet him and bid him farewell…

I sat solo in our corner booth patiently waiting for the guest of honor (the birthday girl) and friends to arrive.
The Maître D noticed me sitting alone and quickly brought over a glass a of champagne with a floating strawberry…I made friends with our waiter Nate and gave him the scoop of who’s birthday it was and why we were there.
The DJ was spinning a mix of Fat Boy Slim, Claude Challe, and perhaps maybe some Brazilian House (which is one of my all time favorites). For the most part…there usually more beautiful women that are surrounded by fewer good looking men. Tonight, however, at Bistro Bagatelle it was an equal ratio. The men sported linen shirts and man cleavage paired with a tailored sports jacket and possibly a gold watch…and the women were simply breathtaking.
I sipped my champagne and ate my strawberry…I glanced down at the time…it was 11:07PM…the birthday girl had arrived!

Follow us from appetizers & champagne, to birthday Sundays & shake’n it on the tables…from Bistro Bagatelle to RDV (rendezvous lounge next door)…the night is young and so are we…

More to follow...

Kick'n it Miami

Kick'n it w/Mama Gross @ the Gansevoort Hotel South Beach, Miami FL

Gansevoort roof top pool party, with mama Gross & Co., mani's and pedi's post morning work out...design district, ice coffee, bal harbour (carpaccio dinner), now kick'n it balcony side overlooking miami's beautiful shore line (GD i wish i was in TLV).
Many stories, many pictures...much to blog about...

When luxury hotelier father & son team of Gansevoort Hotel Group New York, William and Michael Achenbaum brought the hotel to Miami's finest shoreline, I can almost guarantee that the quintisential Miami pool party (what I've experienced today) was not on the original agenda. (vision)

As current managing group of Gansevoort South, Coral Hospitality is clearly trying to:
A)make the Winter Music Conference last a little longer into the summer season, while attracting Jersey's finest and house tunes galore,
B)bring Vegas to the Latin infused turquoise beaches of Miami Beach
C)give New York's notorious Meat Packing district a sexy, southern makeover; the more tattoos, the more muscle, the less bikini...the BETTER!

I never realized that sporting daddy's Daytona on my left wrist with a vintage Chanel tote on my right, and my MOTHER could do such wonders when trying to check into an exclusive, yet trashy (in a young money Miami way), rooftop party.

"My mother and I are guests of guests who are currently on the roof, who's names I am not at liberty to say at the moment..." I checked my watch for the time and quickly looked up at the heavy set bouncer, "They have a cabana by the south end of the pool."

he looked at me and simply didn't care (I could have been Ivanka freak'n Trump and he still wouldn't care)..."your G card ma'am?" he held his hand out.

my mother chimed in with her thick European accent, "this is the line? I just don't get it! does this man understand we are late for...and people are expecting us?"She then turned to me and said something along the lines of "let's just go to neiman, this is too young for me anyway and your cousin will understnad if we don't show...yaeli, i mean look at this place! these people don't know how to dress for the beach? they think they are in the french riviera but they don't even come close!"

She reached for her bberry in her orange Burken and made a quick phone call to the party upstairs...just a little hebrew and a few BS remarks to the security guard and off we were...to the Roof top party!

it's 1:13am and my eyes are 30% open.
I can't wait to share my day with you!

to be continued (tomorrow).

Summer Skins @ Barneys

I'm looking for the perfect summer skin. My #1 is a tote bag, I don't enjoy over the shoulder bags as much during the summer, expecially in this hot city! Suggestions anyone?
These are all Proenza Schouler @ Barneys...except for the Balenciaga (yellow and grey).
Proenza Schouler just came out with amazing skins! They're priced in the $3k's, so I'm not too sure I'll be buying one prior to the summer sale...check these out!
